We’re helping one of our favorite Clinton Hill families find a wonderful nanny–family assistant for their three children, ages 3, 6, and 10. They’re sweet, fun kids with different personalities and interests, and the family is looking for someone warm, patient, and genuinely engaged who enjoys caring for both preschool- and school-age children.
The role
The day starts at noon, with time before school pickup to prepare dinner, take care of the children’s laundry, place grocery orders through FreshDirect, and handle other agreed-upon child-related household tasks.
School pickup is at approximately 3 p.m. Afternoons involve getting the children to activities, arranging playdates, playing and spending time together, and keeping homework on track. Evenings include dinner, baths, and the bedtime routine.
Keeping things tidy after the kids is part of the job: cleaning up the kitchen after meals, putting away toys, and keeping the children’s rooms and play areas in order. This position does not include general housecleaning.
What the family is looking for
Someone affectionate, patient, and emotionally steady who can also set clear, consistent boundaries. The ideal candidate will genuinely enjoy getting to know each child, engage with their individual interests, help them work through conflicts, and encourage age-appropriate independence.
Strong organizational skills, initiative, and confidence managing multiple children’s schedules are important, as is the ability to get the children around the city safely. The family would love someone who can take ownership of the daily routine while keeping the parents informed.
They value open communication and mutual feedback, including a regular check-in about upcoming plans, and would love to find someone interested in building a relationship with the family over many years.
Schedule and household
The regular schedule is 12–8 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional earlier starts or later finishes may be needed for school closures, sick days, or evening plans. Schedule changes will be discussed with as much advance notice as possible; very late nights are unusual.
Mom and Dad sometimes work from home, so they’re in and out during the day. The home is a five-story brownstone without an elevator, so you’ll need to be comfortable with stairs.
Travel
The family spends most of the summer on Martha’s Vineyard and needs a nanny who can join them for at least four weeks, with availability for additional weeks preferred. The two older children attend day camp, so you’ll spend much of your time with the youngest.
Summer arrangements, including whether the weeks are consecutive or split, expected working hours, days off, accommodations, and any additional weeks, will be discussed and agreed in advance.
The family also takes two or three trips during the school year and would like the nanny to accompany them. Travel and lodging are covered.
Driving and swimming are required; a car is provided.
Compensation and benefits
• $40–$45 per hour, based on experience
• 40 guaranteed hours per week
• Overtime pay for hours worked over 40 per week
• Health stipend
• A minimum of two weeks of paid time off
• Selected paid holidays, based on federal calendar, the parents’ work schedules and agreed in advance
